Over the summer going into my senior year of college I got a Graphic Design Internship at Callaway Golf, as one of the designers in the costumes department. The job I had was to take companies' logos and create mockups of what the logo would look like on golf  balls before stamping. The company got to pick from the variety of colors we offered and each logo would consist of one solid color but each ball could have up to two different colored logos on it. The companies, as well as picking colors for the logos, can create a custom player number up to four digits. If they wanted to be all number 1 they could be or if there was a year the place was established they could do that as well. Each ball has a pentagon shaped base for sizing on the golf ball. ??? depending on what the company wanted they could either have the pentagon on the ball with the color and their logo in white, or they could invert it to not have the pentagon shape and have just their logo in color on the ball. The first set of images, with the two balls side by side, are the front of the ball and the side. We show a side image of the ball because there is a stamp that defines what kind of golf ball it is and it shows how the logo might look being cut off a little. If the logo was cut off in a weird way we could rotate the logo, using the angles that were allowed, to make it look correct. Once the desired mockups were created they were sent off to the companies to be looked at and see which one they would want to be made or if any changes wanted to be made then they would be done before being made. After approval, films had to be made with the correct logo rendition. The films were created in illustrator then printed on plastic. Cutting them out and creating metal plates with the logos burned into them was done after the films were made. Once the plates were done they could be taken onto the floor and put into the stamping machines to test on some golf balls to see if they were coming out correctly.
Under the mockups of the golf balls is what the films looked like on the computer. Each rectangle is going to be made into a metal plate for the stamping machine. The logos on the films each have a specific size, angle, and distortion to be stamped on a curved surface and still look correct. They are black no matter what the stamp color will be so when the films burned into the plates it would work right.
This card was a fun extra thing I did that was an idea to go into the packs of costum balls.
